Who we are
Steve Rutledge – President of AAVIL, is a Rotarian on the International Committee at The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise, a recipient of two Port Hope Civic Awards (the most recent in 2011 for Philanthropy), is a recipient of several Paul Harris Awards for his community and international work and presented with the Family and Community Service Award by the Rotary Club of Courtice in 2018. Steve is also the recipient of the Rotary District 7070 Bob Scott Disease Prevention Award.
Steve was co-owner of a medium-sized computer firm for 22 years. Since then Steve has served on several boards and committees including the Municipal Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee, Skatepark Committee, Capitol Theatre Board and others. He currently volunteers in a number of capacities in Durham Region and is a member of Rotary District 7070 Water and Sanitation Committee.
Barry Mount CLU – Director of AAVIL, serves as President and is a founding partner of Hardiman, Mount and Associates established in 1984. He is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise and has served as Director, Treasurer, Vice President and President, in addition to serving on various committees. Barry has also served as Committee Chair, Director, President and Chairman of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce, a Director and Chairman of Lakeridge Health and served as a member of the Mayor’s Task Force for physician recruitment in Whitby. As a strong supporter of the community, Mr. Mount has served in various community activities including soccer coach for 13 years, 10 years as a Scout leader and 3 years as Vice Chair, and board member of the Henry Street High School Business Council.
Barry is past Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Group Insurance Plan Agents Advisory Committee and current member of RWAM’s Insurance Administrators Inc. Agent’s Advisory Council. He also served as a Director for the Whitby Hydro Energy Corporation for two 3-year terms ending January 2012.
Kerry Mount – Director of AAVIL, is the Human Resources and Accounting Manager for Hardiman Mount & Associates, (an Employee Benefits firm in Whitby). A proud wife to her Rotarian husband, she participates in many endeavours of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise including AAVIL, projects in the Dominican Republic and local community efforts. In addition, Kerry has served on a number of boards in support of local community fundraising efforts. She has worked in the insurance field since 1997 and was the Secretary of the Durham Brokers Association. Kerry holds a BA from the University of Guelph, her RIBO license and CAIB designation.
Faye Langmaid – Secretary of AAVIL, was a senior manager in municipal government. Faye’s work focused on land, community and park development, and the related policy formulation and its application. Faye enjoys travelling and volunteers for a number of community development organizations.
Faye holds a BLA from University of Toronto and an MPA from Queens University, is a fellow of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects and a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners. Faye has served on several boards and committees including the Municipal Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee, Ontario Parks Foundation, Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation and others.
Hugh J. Parker – Director and previous Treasurer of AAVIL, is a retired lawyer living in Port Hope, Ontario. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto (Trinity College) Hon.B.A., Yale University B.D. and the University of Western Ontario LL.B.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Parker held administrative positions in higher education initially at U of Toronto as Assistant to the Principal of Innis College and subsequently at Lakehead University beginning as Executive Assistant to the President, then Chief of Academic Services and lastly as Special Advisor to the President.
After practising law as a generalist for thirteen years in Port Hope, he became in-house Legal Counsel to the Children’s Aid Society of Northumberland; a position he held for nineteen years until retirement in 2007.
Mr. Parker served as Chair of the Board of the Port Hope and District Hospital, Community Living Northumberland West, Port Hope Health Care Centre, Port Hope Lions Club, Port Hope Rotary Club, the Ganaraska Valley Probus Club, and Northumberland Business Development Assistant Corporation. He currently also serves as a Director of Five Counties Children’s Centre and previously on the Port Hope Police Services Board and the Provincial Board of Kinark Children’s Services.
Douglas Byers – Director of AAVIL, is a member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise. He served as District Governor for District 7070 in 2009-10. Currently he is district trainer and sits on the membership committee, chairs Interact and Earlyact and is a member of the planning committees for the District Conferences for 2012 and 2013. He will chair the Family Council for Hillsdale Terraces (a long-term care facility in Oshawa).
Douglas Byers is a former teacher, principal and administrative officer for the Durham District School Board. He holds a BA in Art History from Carleton University and a MED in Supervision and Administration from Niagara University. He also has a Visual Arts Specialist and Principal's Qualifications.
Mike Miller – Director of AAVIL, has more than 40 years of experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Since earning his Executive Certificate in ADR through Stitt Feld Handy in 2012, he has served as a coach with the organization; mentoring mediators and negotiators in the development of practical conflict resolution skills.
Mr. Miller is President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise. A Rotarian since 2006, he has held leadership roles including Director of Vocational Service and Director of International Service, and has contributed to 19 Ribfests in various leadership capacities. He has also served on a number of volunteer boards and community organizations over the years.
Professionally, Mr. Miller is a former National Business Manager for a mid-sized chemical company, with additional experience in the global certification sector and the Canadian financial industry.
Mr. Miller holds a degree in Business and Economics from York University, a post graduate diploma in Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School, and a Certificate in Teaching and Training Adult Learners from Durham College.
Abroad, we have assigned Mr. Siphan Phantavong as our head co-ordinator in Laos. Mr. Phantavong is a college graduate from Luang Prabang and is now employed by the organization to perform translations services, planning, hygiene training, negotiations for labour, materials and transportation, assistance in community assessments, delivery coordination, project oversight and so much more…
